This is our neighbor, pre-eminent Maui artist Dale Zarrella, doing what he does best---right on the edge of the ocean in our front yard! You couldn't find a more inspiring studio. He's sculpting a mermaid sitting on a coral reef with a hundred sea turtles surrounding her. The wood is from a huge section of a monkey pod tree that was burned in the Ah Fook's market fire. Talk about making beauty out of ashes.
This magnificent sculpture will eventually end up at the Grand Wailea Hotel, but for now WE get the thrill of seeing her beauty emerge a little more each day! If you look carefully, you can see our condo peeking off of her left shoulder.
